Forensic Consultant

Mason started his career with North American Forensic Accounting PC (NAFA) after completing an internship with Breon and Associates PC before the merger with NAFA. Forensics has always been a passion for Mason, beginning his studies of the topic early in his education at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where he was an active member in the Forensics program. During this time, he developed skills with technology to leverage programs that allow the firm to tackle larger datasets more efficiently and provide better insights for clients.

In his first experiences with public accounting, Mason began working in tax preparation and auditing work for non-profits and small unions during an internship with a local firm. This experience allowed Mason to get a base in tax services and a good foundation for forensic services to bring forward with him. In his time at NAFA, Mason has assisted in many engagements helping clients in a variety of industries with a myriad of issues providing valuable analysis and data presentation skills.

Select Case Experience

Mason acts primarily in a support role for forensic accounting engagements, assisting more senior professionals within the firm. In this role Mason helps with around 10-15 cases in a year. At NAFA, Mason provides added value through technology primarily, leveraging the scripting and automation of accounting tools to reduce manual labor and error, while increasing efficiency and providing key analytical metrics.

  • Recalculated time records as part of a wage and hour case and assisted in providing litigation support through data analysis tools, automated scripting, and programming
  • Analyzed financial reports and other company information of a manufacturing organization to create a financial profile and analytics to facilitate a quality of earnings report for the client
  • Reconstructed the value of personal loans with various terms and conditions to provide a value to clients to help settle their dispute
  • Assisted in reconstructing the revenue and expenses of a food service company to calculate the loss due to business interruptions from a fire
  • Assisted in a contract dispute case by providing analytical calculations and graphical representations to facilitate further analysis and provide more comprehensive presentation to the client

 

Technology and data analytics skills

Mason has developed skills with technology that allow him to provide additional analysis and custom solutions that could not be offered with traditional accounting tools. To facilitate this throughout the work process Mason has learned multiple programming languages and how to apply them effectively within accounting tools.

  • Experience with CaseWare IDEA, a data analytics tool capable of handling extremely large datasets
  • Extensive use of IDEAscript the programming language built into IDEA meant to leverage its already powerful tools
  • Experience using Python, primarily in combination with IDEAScript tools allowing for more direct control over the program and even further customized solutions
  • Extensive use of Microsoft Excel Macros combined with use of the VBA programming language to allow for automation of tasks in Excel
  • Experience with the full Microsoft Office suite and the integrations that it allows

Mason also researches and provides support to the Firm related to artificial intelligence (AI) and its application to the firm’s engagement.
